About Bed Stu
Bed Stu takes its name from the Bedford-Stuyvesant (often called Bedford-Stuy or Bed-Stuy) neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. This neighborhood is known for the deep, resilient roots of its culture and community, and Bed Stu takes inspiration from the creative heritage that Bedford-Stuyvesant represents. From their start in a small warehouse in Los Angeles more than two decades ago, Bed Stu has been committed to the idea that quality craftsmanship is paramount, and that true shoemaking expertise can't be mimicked by machines. By bucking the trend of mass production and focusing on the beauty of a one-of-a-kind, hand-finished product, Bed Stu has made a significant mark on the footwear industry.
Tradition is a key factor in Bed Stu's success. Cobbler pieces are made using time-honored techniques, such as hand cutting, hand weaving, hand stitching, washing, tumbling, and hand finishing. Many Bed Stu shoes feature Goodyear welting, a labor-intensive but highly durable method of shoe construction that makes it easy for the shoe to be resoled in the future. When it comes to materials, Bed Stu uses vegetable-tanned, chrome-free natural leather, free range when possible. Most leathers are treated using formaldehyde and chromium, and while that method is quicker, those two substances are listed as human carcinogens by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which made switching to vegetable tanning a no-brainer for Bed Stu. They are committed to eventually making their process 100% organic, and they currently offer a special Organics Collection as a step in that direction. Because of Bed Stu's hands-on approach to shoemaking, each and every Bed Stu shoe is unique in some way.
While Bed Stu's techniques might hearken back to old-school traditions, their clientele is ultra-modern.
